FERA at the 78th Cannes Film Festival: Industry trends, cultural diversity & the role of cinema in democracy
FERA participated in the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival from 15 to 20 May 2025, attending and contributing to several events focused on European audiovisual policy, cultural diversity, and the link between cinema and democracy.
Celebrating EU audiovisual sector and cultural diversity
On 17 May, FERA attended a roundtable co-hosted by the CNC and FERA associate member SACD marking the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
The discussion focused on the historical creation of the cultural exception in international trade and its current relevance in the context of global platforms. Speakers included director Costa-Gavras, former diplomat Jean Musitelli, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, and European Commission Executive Vice-President Stéphane Séjourné.
On 18 May, FERA attended the event marking the 10th anniversary of the European Film Agency Directors association (EFAD) which highlighted the role of public film funding in sustaining a diverse European audiovisual landscape. Speakers included Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset, European Commissioner Glenn Micallef and national film fund representatives.
On the same day, French filmmakers association L’ARP and FERA member La SRF published a manifesto calling on EU institutions to strengthen support for the audiovisual sector and defend European cultural sovereignty. The statement was endorsed by several organisations and circulated widely among policymakers and professionals.
EU support to audiovisual and the democratic role of cinema
On 15 May, FERA CEO Pauline Durand-Vialle moderated a panel organised by the European Parliament’s LUX Audience Award on the future of EU support to the film and audiovisual sector gathering MEPs Laurence Farreng and Emma Rafowicz, Ada Solomon (EPC, European Film Academy) and Mathias Holtz (Europa Cinemas).
The discussion addressed priorities for the next EU long-term budget (MFF) and focused on the Creative Europe MEDIA programme’s role in supporting European production and distribution.
FERA CEO Pauline Durand-Vialle also took part in the panel “Framing Democracy: The Power of Film,” organised by the Nordic film institutes, moderated by Rebecca Leffler and included director Ali Abbasi, producers Didar Domehri and Jean-Christophe Simon, and programmer Tine Fischer. The session explored the role of cinema in democratic resilience, freedom of expression, and civic engagement amid increasing polarisation and disinformation.
