FERA attacks Italian Culture Cuts (July 2009)
FERA attacks Italian Culture Cuts
Press Release – 20 July 2009
The European Federation of Film Directors wishes to make clear its extreme concern at the massive 25% plus cuts proposed by Prime Minister Berlusconi for the Italian F.U.S. Cultural Funds. In particular Italian cinema is threatened with a reduction down to one fifth of its 2009 subsidy, seriously endangering the entire Italian film culture: Istituto Luce, the Centro Sperimentale and the Venice Film Festival as well as the production and distribution of high quality independent Italian films. European directors have always held up Italy as one of the pillars of European art and culture. In the land where many of the masterpieces of cinema were made this would be vandalism of the highest order.
We call on Prime Minister Berlusconi to recall these plans immediately and to find another solution.
