FERA speaks at the European Coproduction Forum 2024
On 28 March, FERA CEO Pauline Durand-Vialle joined a European Coproduction Forum session delving into the interplay between ecologically sustainable production and the audiovisual creative process, to present the network’s ACTION! Manifesto initiative.
The 2024 European Coproduction Forum, a participatory event which took place at La Tricoterie in Brussels on 27-28 March, focused on “How to build a sustainable business in TV and cinema? A deep dive into the future of the audiovisual industry”. Over two days, six thematic conference sessions were organised on topics from sustainability to audience development, interspersed with workshops and networking opportunities.
On the second day, the FERA CEO joined Josh Cockcroft, Director of Climate Spring, and Sara Viglione, Green Development Manager at TorinoFilmLab in a panel discussion dubbed “Are there ways to marry ecological sustainability and new creative directions?” moderated by SparkNews’ Sandy Arzur and Alma Gavazzi.
The session explored means to reduce the environmental impact of audiovisual productions, as well as ways to diversify creative teams. The questions at the core of the debate were, how films and series can shape audience’s vision of the world and how we can implement a sustainable approach without restricting creativity – avoiding a punitive approach to sustainable production constraints imposed artificially on screenwriters, directors, actors and crew members already under significant pressure.
The FERA ACTION! Manifesto was presented as a creative provocation to raise awareness in the European screen directors’ community on the essential importance of actively developing new ways to work for audiovisual authors, starting from the very early stage of development of a project.
This session concluded with the presentation of the Screens of Tomorrow movement and its guides for the audiovisual and video games industries, aiming to “tell stories that highlight a more inclusive and sustainable society through TV, film and video games”.
