FERA speaks on AI at Artsenico Open Forum #5
On 25 April 2024, FERA CEO Pauline Durand-Vialle participated in Artscenico’s (European Federation for Costume & Production Design) 5th Open Forum online on “Authorship & AI – How to surf the wave?”, hosted by Artscenico President and production designer Maximilian Lange and moderated by voice actor Patrick Messe from United Voice Artists.
The event looked into the potential of the technology for creation and the cultural sector, as well as the future of authors’ rights and copyright in the Artificial Intelligence era.
Prof. Björn Stockleben, Professor for Emerging Media Production at Film University Konrad Wolf, Babelsberg gave an overview of which AI tools have proven useful for production and costume designers and of what future developments are in store.
Barcelona-based Copyright Lawyer Dr. Cristina Busch, specialist lawyer for copyright and media law and legal advisor for IMAGO’s copyright and working conditions, then presented the state of play of copyright legislation at European level and how the AI Act, approved by the EU Parliament in March 2024, touches to copyright.
FERA CEO Pauline Durand-Vialle was invited to give an overview of the European agenda and how it may affect the uptake of AI technology in the audiovisual sector. She stressed the importance to monitor European policy-making in the area, while continuing to assert the priorities of creators and the cultural sectors in regulating the use of this technology in the debate, as they risk being sidelined by wider industrial and economic development agendas.
