FERA teams up with EFAD in exclusive joint screening of Championext (Campeonex) by Javier Fesser
On 24 October, EFAD – European Film Agency Directors, the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and the Spanish Film and Audiovisual Arts Institute (ICAA) hosted an exclusive screening of Championext (original title: Campeonex) by Spanish screen director and multiple Goya Award-winner Javier Fesser (Camino, Mortadelo y Filemón contra Jimmy el Cachondo), at Cinema Palace in Brussels.
The screening was part of the #rendezvouswitheuropeancinema initiative, in the context of which EFAD shows one feature or documentary film to European policymakers and stakeholders on a big screen each semester, from the EU country holding the presidency of the Council.
The screenings are organised in partnership with various European associations from the audiovisual and cultural sector: FERA, CEPI, CICAE, Cineuropa, Creative Europe Media, European Coalitions for Cultural Diversity, European Producers Club, Europa Cinemas, Europa Distribution, Europa International, the European Film Academy, SAA, and Morena Films.
The sports-comedy-drama Championext is the sequel to Fesser’s hit comedy Champions, which was the highest-grossing Spanish language film in Spain in 2018 and got a US remake starring Woody Harrelson in the role of the coach. In this new instalment, our heroes, an endearing and diverse basketball team, abandon their beloved sport by mistake, when their newbie coach enrolls them in an athletics competition. The sports team in Championext is based on the true story of Aderes team, consisting of players with intellectual disabilities, who won multiple championships in Spain. The film highlights the importance and benefits of inclusion in sports.
