KIDS Regio, a lobbying initiative at the crossroad between policy & society, the film industry and the scientific world aiming at supporting children live-action films, commissioned a study titled Keeping Up with Children as an Audience. This research, spanning 12 European countries, delves into the film-watching habits and preferences of children aged 7 to 11. It follows on from the Kids Regio Forum 2024 that took place last June in Erfurt, Germany, in which FERA participated, and offers valuable insights into how young audiences consume and engage with films. It highlights critical trends and challenges in creating meaningful cinematic experiences for children.
Book 1: Building Bridges: A shared Mission for Children’s Film in Europe focuses on the importance of collaboration across the children’s film industry, and highlight the need for strong partnerships between filmmakers, producers, distributors, and policymakers to sustain children’s cinema.
Book 2: Keeping Up with Children as an Audience examines young audiences’ viewing habits and their evolving expectations. This anthropological study conducted in collaboration with Will&Agency’s publikum.io from Denmark analyses qualitative data from children aged 7-11 in 12 European countries.
Book 3: European Children’s Film: What Counts presents quantitative data on production and audience trends in children’s films and finds that although production has increased, distribution remains a major challenge, limiting visibility for many films.
