The Conference Art, Politics and Society: When Artists Change the World. Past, Present and Future was hosted by Greek MEP Alexis Georgoulis at the European Parliament in Brussels on December 11th, 2019. The event focused on the influence of art and artists on politics, showcasing examples of artists, artworks, relevant policies and good practices to inspire today’s artists and reinforce the cultural landscape in Europe. The event was structured into two panels and gathered artists – directors, writers, actors, musicians, sculptors, painters – among which Greek Directors Guild FERA delegate and director Eugenia Arsenis, academics, critics as well as Louise Haxhausen, Director of the UNESCO Liaison Office in Brussels and UNESCO Representative in the EU and FERA CEO Pauline Durand-Vialle.
Eugenia Arsenis participated in the first panel with a presentation titled Artivism Drives Democracy: The Artists as Leaders on the Change of Society and Pauline Durand-Vialle participated in the second panel and spoke about Filmmakers in 21st century Europe: free creative voices in a changing industry, highlighting the importance of filmmakers for social cohesion and the challenges they face as global streamers emerge in the EU landscape.
The event concluded with a Q&A session, where speakers had the opportunity to go into more details about the topics discussed.
