European filmmakers to meet at LICHTER Filmfest Frankfurt International for FERA 2022 General Assembly annual conference

For its first in-person gathering since 2019, the Federation of European Screen Directors’ General Assembly 2022 will take place in Frankfurt, Germany, from 11 May to 13 May, kindly hosted by AG DOK in partnership with BVR, LICHTER Filmfest Frankfurt International, with the support of VG Bild-Kunst. 2022 is a year of renewal for the organization as its members will be electing a new Executive Committee and new Honorary President for the next two years.
Thanks to the partnership with the LICHTER Filmfest Frankfurt International, FERA’s annual conference will feature two live-streamed public sessions, gathering filmmakers and key industry players to discuss recent developments affecting the craft of filmmaking and the future of European film.
The first panel will share testimonies and experiences of filmmaking during and about military conflicts, as the Russian invasion in Ukraine is bringing back into focus the unique role of filmmakers at war. At a time when we are reminded that culture is an essential part of any well-functioning democracy, filmmakers with singular voices hold a much-needed mirror up to society. Yet while the artistic and creative freedom they need is eroding across Europe, public intervention meant to support the audiovisual sector’s recovery from Covid-19 seems to solely focus on globalizing, digitizing, and greening it further: the second panel will discuss how to put artistic, creative and cultural diversity back at the heart of audiovisual policies across Europe.
