FERA speaks at ReCreating Europe final conference

On March 21, FERA CEO spoke of the specific challenges faced by audiovisual authors during a timely session dedicated to Authors, Performers and AI at ReCreating Europe final conference in Brussels.
Key outputs of the project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme include research and policy recommendations on Authors’ and performers’ experience with using AI and platform algorithms, AI training data and text and data mining, Reversion rights, and Copyright and neighboring rights for AI (music) productions which were introduced during the session.
Responding to the presentations, FERA CEO Pauline Durand-Vialle stressed that increased academic focus on AV authors’ contracts was very welcome, particularly in relation to the implementation of the 2019 Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market provisions on Fair remuneration in exploitation contracts of authors and performers.
She noted that the use of artificial intelligence in the AV sector today was led by global streamers considered as AI-driven editorial agents, who reportedly use the technology for recommendation purposes, to inform commissioning and editorial choices as well as through a partial automation of the creative process.
While the European audiovisual industry is today in constant flux as the production and distribution markets are experiencing sea-changes, the screen directors’ community remains attached to the fundamentals that are artistic freedom, which includes retaining authorship on their work, and cultural diversity.
To uphold them, they share with authors and performers across the different cultural and creative sectors their belief in a human-centric approach of AI to enrich artistic work articulated around two key principles to avoid risks of misappropriation of their work: transparency and consent.
